David Smith

CEO, Canadian Mental Health Association – Peel Dufferin

David Smith started his career as a frontline community mental health worker working for several CMHA branches in housing and case management. Today, he is the CEO of CMHA Peel Dufferin. He has previously led the Ontario Ministry of Health & Long Term Care’s community mental health and support services team and community support service organizations across the province. He has also worked with the Mental Health NHS Trust in the UK, where he oversaw the integration of child and adolescent mental health services.

David says he’s living his dream, and here are three takeaways:

  • Surround yourself with good people and a culture that constantly challenges you to grow
  • As an aspiring leader, don’t rush. You can focus on excelling in either one of three goal areas: education, family or career.
  • Don’t worry about meeting all the job requirements of a job posting before you decide to apply for a job you want
