Consultant, Public Health Agency of Canada
Kate Mulligan is an applied policy shaper and researcher working on community leadership and self-determination in public health. She serves as the Canadian lead for the International Social Prescribing Network. She is currently writing a commissioned report for the Chief Public Health Officer of Canada, envisioning the role of community resilience in the future of public health. She is a globally recognized advocate, policy maker and researcher on health equity and community well-being, and teaches health equity and communications at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health. She sits on several health-related boards including the Toronto Board of Health and has a strong interest in the role of public governance in public health. She is a frequent media commentator on matters of health equity, healthy public policy and community wellbeing and here are three takeaways:
- Learn how to take up space, and when other leaders step aside for you – “Own your voice”
- Sometimes as Canadians, or those working in not-for-profits, we feel it’s more humble to step out of the way, however we need courageous leaders to stand up
- As a leader, self-care is important and if that’s a challenge for you – look at self-care as an obligation and duty rather than an indulgence
