Dr. Lawrence Loh

Medical Officer of Health, Region of Peel

Dr. Loh has served as an Associate Medical Officer of Health since 2016, leading many key health initiatives for Peel Region including community water fluoridation, Lyme disease prevention, Zika virus, provincial food and recreational water regulations, renewal of the Ontario Public Health Standards, and deployment of electronic medical records.

Prior to his time at Peel Public Health, Dr. Loh served at all 3 levels of government in 2 provinces. He worked at the Public Health Agency of Canada in the vaccine safety division, at Fraser Health Authority in British Columbia as Medical Health Officer for Burnaby and the Tri-Cities, and as Senior Medical Consultant to Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health. His connection to the Peel community goes even further back, though, having first entered practice as a family physician in Heart Lake in northwest Brampton, before completing a Masters at Johns Hopkins and specialty training right here at Peel Public Health as a senior resident in 2011.

You have likely seen and heard Dr. Loh in the news throughout the COVID-19 pandemic while working with all levels of government, and here are three takeaways:

  • Not making a decision is a decision
  • Check-in with your staff, recognize them, have their backs and show parts of yourself that are human
  • Don’t feed the trolls: be the bigger person and don’t waste time arguing with people who don’t want to change
